Confession:  I spent a ridiculous amount of time with my nose in a book last weekend.  Ok, maybe it was three books and perhaps my reading time stretched into the week.  Regardless, I was obsessed with the Hunger Games trilogy.  I still am.

The most interesting part is that it always takes convincing for me to read these “types” of books.  By “types” I mean vampires, werewolves, mockingjays, etc.  The truth of the matter is– I don’t like gore and I don’t like being scared.  There is more than enough sadness and gore in life that I don’t particularly care to read anything for enjoyment that is going to make me more sad.

So, how do I always get roped into these blockbuster books that obsesses my psyche and take over my life?  Peer pressure of course.  A few years ago, I was heading out-of-town on vacation and after countless offers (and countless rejections) to borrow the Twilight books, one of my besties told me she was sticking it in my bag “just in case” I needed something to read on the plane or beach.  I was pregnant at the time with my daughter, so I only had one child to chase on vacation.  Bestie C  was optimistic, that I might actually have time to read.  Of course, I did not have time during normal waking hours, but the 3 hour time change allowed me to spend my sleepless nights staying up ridiculously late reading.

I knew I was hooked when I finished the book mid-flight on the way back home and was praying that I would have enough time on our layover to find the second book somewhere in the airport.  I did and probably became the oldest member of Team Edward.  The rest is history.

Enter the Hunger Games.  The title alone had me convinced that I would not like the books.  I kept imagining Mad Max and The Running Man. Neither of which were my favorite movies.  However, a friend lent me the books and when I found myself not quite ready to go to sleep the other night, I grabbed Hunger Games from my nightstand and I dove in.

Three days later I emerged.  Exhausted and sad to have finished the trilogy I made my way back into life.  However, the books still haunt me.  So much so, that I am actually considering reading 50 Shades of Grey, so I can stop thinking of Kantiss and Peeta.  Until I go watch the movie, of course.  

All in all, the books are such an easy, enjoyable read.  One could put a lot of thought into the parallels (hunger games…sending our children off to war etc) or one could just read the books and get caught up with the thrilling story of the Hunger Games.  I absolutely LOVED the books and am therefore declaring The Hunger Games trilogy an Arm Candy Confessions MUST READ!

Confession:  I am a planner.  I have insurance for my entire family–down to my dog.  I worry constantly about my children.  I have taken the car seat installation class, twice.   I often imagine the worst case scenario and plan from there.  I tend to think of it as disaster minimization.

Just to be clear, I am not crippled by fear.  I do not believe that I have control over everything, nor do I want to.   However, if I can eliminate risk, I do.  I recently purchased a Family Emergency Preparedness kit. No, I am not a Doomsday-er.  I just believe that in case of an emergency, if at all possible, I would like my kids to have water, warmth and something to eat.

There are a lot of options for various Emergency Preparedness Kits and my one season of girl scouts makes me extremely qualified to make decisions regarding survival.  So, how does a girl scout dropout decide? I read the reviews of course.   Ultimately, my research led me to decide on the 4 Person Survival Kit by Survival Kits Online.

The kit includes survival items for up to 72 hours for a family of 4.  Everything came nicely packed in the little red duffel as pictured.  I also plan to add a few items for my children, such as diapers, medicine, ipad (joking) etc.  I will need to transfer the items to a nicer backpack or into two backpacks, because there is no way I could make it very far carrying the duffel as it is currently packaged.  First, it’s heavy. Second, did I mention it’s heavy?  However, it is extremely comforting knowing that I have the kit, which will hopefully rot away in my garage never to be seen again.

It is 9am and my arm candies have made shapes, matched colors and decorated cupcakes. There have been no requests from them to turn on the television and I have been able to partake in a few uninterrupted domestic duties.  Coffee has been consumed.  All is well in the world.

Confession:  I miss The Hills.  As embarrassing as it is to admit, Tuesday night television is not the same.  If my husband had a Facebook account, he would most likely be un-friending me after reading the last sentence.

The Hills was one of my guilty pleasures.  I set the DVR to record it on a weekly basis.  It was my go-to recording for late night feedings with my Arm Candy.  I would sneak into the living room, baby in tow, and get caught up on the weekly happenings of Lauren, Kristin and the crew.  It felt like Christmas at 2am, when I stumbled upon a new episode just waiting to be watched.  My baby would get fed and so would my reality show addiction.

However, all good things must come to an end.  My Arm Candy started sleeping through the night just in time for The Hills finale. (A terrible finale by the way)

Thankfully, my favorite Hills bad-girl has kept the hills alive by staying in the spot light. As as of late, K-Cav has been showcasing her recent pregnancy.   I am absolutely obsessed with Kristin Cavallari’s California cool pregnancy style.

With a wedding and baby in the works, does this not make Cavallari a shoe-in for the next Housewife of Beverly Hills? One can sure hope.
